Google is partnering with Automattic/WordPress to develop a low-cost system specifically designed for publishing local news.
An open-source content management system (CMS) which is one of the most widely used platform on the market. The partnership focuses on speed.
The Google News Initiative is now partnering with WordPress to invest $1.2 million in creating a “fast, secure, low-cost publishing system tailor-made to the needs of small newsrooms” called Newspack.
Over the past several years, Google has reiterated how important journalism is to the company. The Google News Initiative provides funding and builds new features optimised for publishers.
Newspack is being developed in an effort to help journalists do more of what they do best – covering news.
To anyone who has developed or worked on WordPress-based websites, they should have realized that the open-source platform has struggled throughout the years with code bloat, security and performance challenges.
Development on Newspack will begin in the coming weeks with a global launch for publishers scheduled later this year.
However, Newspack is not being designed to satisfy the needs of all publishers. It’s specifically created to help small publishers write more stories.
